One morning in spring 2024, Stuart got a lovely email

Hi Mr Owen

I hope this email finds you well. I’m unsure if you remember me but I was part of your soccer school during 1999-2001. Although I didn’t train long with you I do believe you gave me such valuable life lessons, encouragement and support that was much needed during my youth.

Although I went to play football for other teams I later was picked up by Bradford City, then eventually moving to rugby league whereby I played international for many years with 15 caps, grand final winners and was the first female to play from England over in Australia.

I often think back to those days as a 6 year old. I never felt as a girl that I was allowed to play sport but you asked my dad why I wasn’t joining in and after that the rest was history.

Thanks so much again. Keep doing what you’re doing. My early days of playing football in the kitchen with a bruised orange came in useful, in ways I never thought... much beyond kick-ups.

Warm regards,

Charlotte Booth
